Artist Statement

"Every child is an artist."

I love this quote from Pablo Picasso, however, the problem is it is hard to stay an artist when you grow up. I have been creating art since I could crawl. Growing up in Regina, Saskatchewan, my creative passion eventually took me to ACAD (now Alberta University of the Arts), in Calgary, Alberta, to explore where art could take me. Then life happens, and I got sidetracked. Nevertheless, after many years in the hospitality/restaurant industry, marrying the man of my dreams, and having three beautiful daughters. I challenged myself to pick up where I left off and try to be a grown-up artist. I jumped back in with both feet, built a studio in my basement to create the best work I can, of course, in between juggling my crazy, busy life.

I could describe myself as a "multifaceted intuitive abstract artist" or a "self-proclaimed color junkie and experimenter" either way, I always try to approach my work with a playful and energetic attitude. Currently, my mediums are acrylics, alcohol ink with doodling on top, and hand-cut collages with vintage images. I love building layers with paint, paper, and mixed media, then peeling bits off and scraping back to reveal intricately texture and depth. Years ago, I was encouraged to apply my art to ornaments, now every fall, I create my hand-painted "Balls." These one-of-a-kind pieces of art hang on Christmas trees across Canada and the US.

My artistic process can be described as a little hectic, I almost always work on multiple pieces at a time, going back and forth to add and take away. I am building a story each time I touch a piece – each layer reveals more for the viewer. For artists knowing when to stop can be the hardest part – but I have learned my best work comes from going "too far". I do think more is more!

The process of creating is my therapy; it helps me silence the doubts in my head, soothe the aches in my heart and calm the worries in my brain. I surrender to the process and let things happen as I see fit at that exact moment in time. I draw inspiration from my childhood memories, looking through my children's eyes at today's world, my current mood, and the nature that surrounds me.

I just want my pieces to leave a little of me on the canvas and to find a forever home, bringing a little joy to your space.
